Medical Biology

Biomedical research at the Faculty aims to identify disease mechanisms at a molecular level and to develop biotechnological methods that can be used to influence these processes in order to develop more precise diagnostics and novel active substances. The Faculty's biomedical research groups are closely networked with research groups from the Medical Faculty of the University Hospital and the Faculty of Chemistry via the Center of Medical Biotechnology (ZMB).

Water and Environmental Research

In water and environmental research, the Faculty cooperates closely with the Center for Water and Environmental Research (ZWU), which focuses on the topics of water, people and the environment and pools the experience and resources of scientists working in environmental research. The aim of water research is to create knowledge for the optimal management of the essential resources of water and water bodies and their use. In addition to short-term developments, this research must also take into account very long-term and transnational developments. Problems relating to water as a resource have a serious impact on the living conditions of the environment and human society.

Empirical Teaching and Learning Research

The research focus on subject-related empirical teaching and learning research is represented by two working groups in the didactics of biology. Their research focuses on investigating the teaching and learning of biology, both in school and university contexts as well as in other places of learning. They also collaborate with other subject didactics and educational research groups to answer interdisciplinary questions. Their work is integrated into the activities of the Interdisciplinary Center for Educational Research (IZfB) and the Center for Teacher Education (ZLB).

Center of Medical Biotechnology (ZMB)

The Center for Medical Biotechnology (ZMB) is an interdisciplinary research center at the University of Duisburg-Essen. It combines basic research on campus with application-oriented medical research at the University Hospital Essen. The ZMB elucidates molecular disease mechanisms and translates knowledge into medical progress. It is an important player in key areas of biomedical research and the development of new drugs and diagnostic tools.

Centre for Water and Environmental Research (ZWU)

The Centre for Water and Environmental Research (ZWU) is an interdisciplinary and interdepartmental research center at the University of Duisburg-Essen. It was founded in 2003 under the name Centre for Microscale Environmental Systems (ZMU).

With its focus on the topics of water and humans and the environment, the ZWU serves the profile focus of urban systems and pools the experience and resources of scientists working in environmental research.

Interdisciplinary Centre for Educational Research (IZfB)

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Educational Research (IZfB) is a cross-faculty central scientific institution of the University of Duisburg-Essen. The interdisciplinary focus is reflected in the anchoring of education-related topics far beyond the Faculty of Education across all eleven faculties of the UDE. In order to do justice to the great importance of basic research as well as transfer and practice-oriented applied research in the field of education, the IZfB networks interdisciplinary educational research and develops it further.
